Could you qualify for Local Council Tax Reduction?

If you receive Universal Credit or if you’re on a low income and claim other benefits, you may have to pay less Council Tax.

This will depend on where you live and your personal circumstances.

You’ll get 25% off your bill if you count as an adult for Council Tax and either:

  • you live on your own
  • no-one else in your home counts as an adult

You’ll usually get a 50% discount if no-one living in the property, including you.

To find out if you qualify for a Local Council Tax Reduction and to apply visit your Local Councils website:

If you are not sure of which council you are under, or with a Liverpool devolved councils (Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral, Liverpool) – to find your council visit: www.gov.uk/find-local-council.

##New to Universal Credit? If you’re claiming Universal Credit for the first time, it’s important to apply for a Local Council Tax reduction straight away.

Many Local Council’s won’t backdate council tax reduction, so don’t wait until your claim for Universal Credit has been approved or paid, make the claim immediately.
