Rent convergence: what you need to know

21 October 2026

Earlier this year, the government announced some changes to social housing tenants' rents called rent convergence. This is because over time, some tenants living in similar homes pay different rent amounts.

From next April, the government is allowing social landlords, like us, to increase certain rents by a small extra amount each year. This is until rents are the same for similar types of homes. In April 2027, the rent top-up is an extra £1 a week. In April 2028, the extra amount will be up to £2 per week.

We understand you may have questions about how these changes affect you. If they do affect you, we will let you know early next year. In the meantime, you can find out more on our Rent and Service Charges webpage.

If you claim Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit covers your rent, you may be eligible to claim for the increase. If you are worried about paying your rent, please get in touch with us.
