To celebrate Dignity Action Day, colleagues and residents at Torus’ Extra Care schemes have signed up to become Dignity Champions.

In a week-long celebration of Dignity Action Day (1 February 2022), Extra Care schemes have been hosting several events designed to allow residents to express what dignity means to them through craft and poetry.

Dignity Action Day, a national campaign led by the Dignity in Care Campaign, helps to ensure dignity is a reality for all and that people in care are treated as individuals, are given choice, control, and a sense of purpose in their daily activities.

Extra Care schemes, like the four Torus run, offer independent living to those aged 55 and over alongside flexible care to meet changing needs, providing safe and secure homes for people later in life.

To celebrate Dignity Action Day, residents and staff from Torus’ Extra Care schemes, including care, bistro and salon providers, have all signed up as Dignity Champions, committing to bringing better dignity to their residents and customers.

Debbie Cason, Torus Extra Care Network Manager said:

“Everybody has the right to be treated with dignity and respect – but this is especially important for people receiving care and support services. Planning for this week has been a real collaborative effort from all our colleagues and partners across our schemes to put dignity at the heart of everyone’s mind.

“I am really looking forward to seeing some of the creative activities and events the schemes have planned for this week, as well as learning more about what dignity looks like for our residents so we can continue to improve the quality of our services and ensure we are putting our residents at the forefront of everything we do”

Last year Torus commissioned charitable arm Torus Foundation to provide health and wellbeing activities across their four Extra Care and 32 Sheltered Schemes. Each scheme has a dedicated Health and Wellbeing Officer who works with residents to provide activities that promote good health and help combat loneliness.

Alan Feenan, Health and Wellbeing Manager for Torus Foundation, added:

“It’s great that everyone working in the schemes – from the bistro partners to the care providers – is involved in Dignity Action Day as one big team. Residents at the schemes work closely with the Torus Foundation’s Health and Wellbeing team to help shape services which promote independence, include self-esteem and reduce isolation.”
