Record-breaking Retro Sports Day sees £28,500 raised for FireFit Hub

27 June 2025

Local organisations descended on Toxteth’s FireFit Hub this June for Torus Foundation’s annual Retro Sports Day, helping to raise £28,500 to renovate the youth and community hub.

On a sunny day in June, 23 teams competed in an event filled with classic sports day activities, ranging from our egg and spoon race to the newly introduced gutter ball challenge, where competitors put their teamwork skills to the test.

While there were lots of laughs, the competitive side of our teams reared its head as we neared the climax of a thrilling day with the inflatable race. It was a close call, but ultimately, Eric Wright came out victorious, with Torus Developments and Arcus grabbing the silver and bronze spots, respectively.

A special thank you needs to go to our amazing sponsors. Primas Law, who were our Platinum Sponsor, and our Gold Sponsors: Castle Green Homes, PMC Northwest, Next Energy UK and Constructive Thinking.

Even though they weren’t able to make the day, John McCall Architects and Markhams generously dug deep to donate to the cause, and thanks to sponsorship and ticket sales, a phenomenal £28,500 has been raised. All money raised will go towards refurbishing FireFit Hub’s Chill Zone, a vital space where young people can relax, connect, and feel supported.

Torus Foundation Managing Director, Kate Shone, said:

“Being able to provide world-class facilities for young people is something we really believe in. Places like the FireFit Hub offer young people living in Toxteth a safe space to really grow their confidence, try new skills and make life-long friends. FireFit Hub is truly part of the community and, thanks to the amazing contributions from our Retro Sports Day sponsors and participants, hundreds more young people will reap the benefits.”

Retro Sports Day is just one of the ways organisations across the North West and further afield can partner with Torus Foundation to invest in communities.

Steph Hill, Business Development and Fundraising Manager at Torus Foundation, said:

“This was our 4th Retro Sports Day and our most successful yet! This event is a brilliant example of the power of social value partnerships – bringing teams together not only for some friendly competition, but to make a meaningful difference in our community.”

Tickets for this year’s Retro Sports Day sold out in record time, but that’s not the only way you can get involved and help support young people in Liverpool. While all funds raised from this event will go to refurbishing the Hub’s Chill Zone, FireFit has big plans to improve the positive impact they already have in the community.

Colin Scicluna, Head of Youth at Torus Foundation, said:

“Retro Sports Day is vital to us to be able to raise the funds needed to refurbish the Chill Out Zone for our members, but we know there’s so much more we can do to help them to thrive.

“We have ambitious plans to develop three inspiring new spaces: a Sensory Room, an Arts & Dance Studio, and a cutting-edge Digital Media Suite. These additions will create powerful opportunities for creativity, expression, and inclusion, ensuring every young person can find a space where they can grow.”

To bring this vision to life, we are looking for partners to support FireFit Hub in continuing to empower young people to build their confidence, discover new talents, and reach their full potential.
